Garifuna Tour - Belize

One of our favorite cultural excursions booked through Hamanasi Resort was the Garifuna Cooking Tour! We traveled by boat out of Hopkins to a Garifuna fishing village. Upon arrival we learned about Garifuna history and then started preparing our meal! For our class we made a traditional Hudut. We mashed plantains to make ‘fu-fu’ the accompaniment to the coconut fish stew. We were involved in every step of the process - opening the coconuts on sharp wooden sticks, mashing the plantains with a large wooden pestle, shredding the coconut, and cleaning the fish. After our delicious meal we took a brief drumming class.
